Scott Walter The Pirate
Описание:
Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, and playwright. Although he was an advocate and legal administrator by profession, Scott is most famous for his great literary works and activities in the Royal Highland Society. Loosely based on the life of the notorious pirate John Gow, the novel tells the tale of Captain Cleveland, his feud with young Mordaunt Mertoun, and their relationships with Mina and Brenda Troll. Of course, as the genre dictates, it is full of romance, danger, and wonderful adventures.

Director of nearly 150 feature films and winner of six Oscars, John Ford (1895-1973) was the quintessential American filmmaker. Ford produced an unparalleled body of work that includes such classics as The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, The Quiet Man, and The Searchers. In response to critics and fans who praised his work as having a powerful, singular vision, Ford was known for making statements such as Its no use talking to me about art, I make pictures to pay the rent; though such assertions betrayed his genuine love of filmmaking, which he called the only thing I really like to do. Author Scott Eyman calls Ford America`s Homer-a fitting title for the filmmaker who helped frame the American experience for the world. About the author: Scott Eyman, Books Editor of the Palm Beach Post, is the author of Ernst Lubitsch: Laughter in Paradise, The Speed of Sound: Hollywood and the Talkie Revolution 1926-1930 and Print the Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford, among others. He lives in Palm Beach, Florida. Издание на английском языке.

Although he was an advocate and legal administrator by profession, Scott is most famous for his great literary works and activities in the Royal Highland Society. This historical novel tells the story of authors most famous character, Sir Dugald Dalgetty of Drumthwacket and his involvement in the fight of Montrose during the English Civil War. The narrative moves dramatically from Dalgettys unflinching encounter with the Duke of Argyll to his escape from Inveraray Castle, and then to the battle of Inverlochy.

Tender Is the Night was one of the most talked-about books of the year. Its amazing how excellent much of it is, Ernest Hemingway said to Maxwell Perkins. I will say now, John OHara wrote Fitzgerald, Tender Is the Night is in the early stages of being my favorite book, even more than This Side of Paradise. And Archibald MacLeish exclaimed: Great God, Scott... You are a fine writer. Believe it - not me.Set on the French Riviera in the late 1920s, Tender Is the Night is the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dicks harrowing demise.

Set in the reign of Richard I, Coeur de Lion, Ivanhoe is packed with memorable incidents - sieges, ambushes and combats - and equally memorable characters: Cedric of Rotherwood, the die-hard Saxon; his ward Rowena; the fierce Templar knight, Sir Brian de Bois-Gilbert; the Jew, Isaac of York, and his beautiful, spirited daughter Rebecca; Wamba and Gurth, jester and swineherd respectively. Scott explores the conflicts between the Crown and the powerful Barons, between the Norman overlords and the conquered Saxons, and between Richard and his scheming brother, Prince John. At the same time he brings into the novel the legendary Robin Hood and his band, and creates a brilliant, colourful account of the age of chivalry with all its elaborate rituals and costumes and its values of honour and personal glory.
