Ernest Hemingways literary apprenticeship was served in journalism, a career that he pursued for over four decades. From his early work as a correspondent for the Toronto Star in Europe during the 1920s, through his inimitable articles for Esquire and his first-hand reports of the Spanish Civil War, to the mellow, ironic chronicle of his last African adventures, few correspondents have produced a more impressive body of work. By-Line presents a fascinating and revealing selection of Hemingways journalism, and charts the development of one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century.

In 1918 Ernest Hemingway went to war. He volunteered for ambulance service in Italy, was wounded and twice decorated. Out of his experience came A Farewell to Arms. Hemingways description of war is unforgettable. He recreates the fear, the comradeship, the courage of his young American volunteer, and the men and women he meets in Italy, with total conviction. But A Farewell to Arms is not only a novel of war. In it Hemingway has also created a love story of immense drama and uncompromising passion.

Jack London was an American novelist, journalist and social activist. Pioneering the genre of magazine fiction and prototyping science fiction, he became one of the first writers, who gained worldwide fame and a large fortune. Being one of the earliest of the modern dystopian fiction, The Iron Heel mirrors the rise of the oligarchy in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. It tells the story of Avis Cunningham, the daughter of a famous physicist, who meets Ernest Everhard, the ardent socialist. At dinner, she criticizes the entire system of modern society, accusing him of exploiting labor. Avis disagrees, and then Ernest gives her an example of a worker who lost his hand and was thrown out on the street by his masters. This fact prompts Evis to study the life of workers. The results are so horrific that she starts to understand the views of Ernest.

Edited by David Stuart Davies The Shadows of Sherlock Holmes is a fascinating collection of stories featuring detectives, criminal agents and debonair crooks from the golden age of crime fiction: a time when Sherlock Holmes was esconsced in his rooms at 221B Baker Street and London was permanently wreathed in a sinister fog. Hornung, The Ghost at Massingham Mansions by Ernest Bramah and The Great Pearl Mystery by Baroness Orczy. Selected and introduced by David Stuart Davies.
